Overview
Conventional penetration grade bitumen has certain limitations such as poor temperature susceptibility and excessive brittleness at low temperatures.Modified binders have the ability to offer improved performance over conventional binders.
Modified Binders (Asphalt)
Colflex A (A-E1 / A-E2)
A penetration grade bitumen modified with SBS polymer. Mainly used as a rut resistant binder for asphalt mixes, particularly on pavements with high deflections. It is suitable for use in open graded mixes such as porous asphalt that requires high binder film thicknesses.
Colwax (A-H2)
Manufactured from 50/70 penetration grade bitumen modified with a long chain aliphatic hydrocarbon wax. Hot mix asphalt layers prepared with COLWAX™ exhibit very high resistance to deformation. Asphalt mixes prepared with COLWAX™ has also proved to have fuel resistance characteristics.
Polymod M (A-P1)
Penetration grade bitumen modified with EVA polymer. POLYMOD M™ is used mainly as a rut resistant binder for asphalt mixes. It is suitable for use in heavy trafficked areas where there is the risk of fuel spillage, such as:
- Intersections and climbing lanes.
- Bus depots and aircraft runways.
Modified Binder (Spray grade)
Colflex S (S-E1 / S-E2)
A 70/100 penetration grade bitumen modified with SBS polymer. COLFLEX S™ is used mainly for
-
- resealing roads with active surface cracks < 5 mm,
- As a Stress Absorbing Membrane Interlayer (SAMI) to prevent cracks from reflecting through the overlaying asphalt layers,
- In chip seals for new construction in highly stressed areas.
RMB3
A 70/100 penetration grade bitumen modified with SBR latex. RMB 3™ is used mainly for resealing roads with surface cracks < 5 mm but can also be used during new construction. Can be applied at higher application rates than conventional hot binders without the risk of bleeding.
Rubspray 70/3 (SC-E1) and 70/5 (SC-E2)
A high viscosity cationic spray grade bitumen emulsion modified with 3% or 5% net SBR latex. Mainly used in cold/wet climates for resealing roads with surface cracks without pre-treatment.
Bitumen rubber
The Colrub division has a number of mobile plants capable of producing large quantities of crumb rubber modified bitumen of consistent quality. Each Colrub unit is assisted by an on-site quality control laboratory.
Colrub LT PDS(A-R2 / S-R2)
A non-homogenous binder manufactured from 50/70 penetration grade bitumen, modified with a relatively high percentage of rubber crumbs and a small amount of aromatic extender oil. The rubber used is processed from recycled tyres to meet a specific grading and natural rubber content.
Colrub (S-R1 / A-R1)
A non-homogenous binder manufactured from 70/100 penetration grade bitumen modified with a relatively high percentage of rubber crumbs. Used mainly for resealing roads with active surface cracks > 5 mm. Also suitable for use in stress absorbing membrane Interlayers (SAMI) to help reduce reflective cracking, as the binder can be applied at higher application rates than conventional penetration grade bitumen and homogenous polymer modified binders without risk of bleeding.
